This course provides a fun and relevant introduction to many aspects of basic audio engineering and electronic music production. Learning takes place in our classroom, recording studio and computer rooms. MAINZ has excellent facilities for enjoyable, hands-on learning.

Introduction to Pro Tools 101 V8

This course covers basic Pro Tools principles, giving you what you need to complete a Pro Tools project, from initial set up to final mixdown.

Whether your project involves recording of live instruments, MIDI sequencing of software synthesizers, or audio looping, this course will give you the basic skills to succeed.

Programme dates: Friday, 24 September 2010 4:00pm - 8:00 pm. Saturday, 25 September 2010, 9:00am- 5:00pm. Sunday, 26 September 2010 1:00pm - 7:00pm.

Introduction to Sibelius Notation

This short course gives a hands on lesson in using Sibelius notation software. Attendees will be using Sibelius 6 (can be directly related to earlier versions of Sibelius).


Core Elements

  • Setting up a score –customising and saving manuscript
  • Basic note entry – including chords, triplets and articulations
  • Must know short cuts
  • Playback -using general MIDI and Sibelius Sounds Essentials
  • Feature review – dynamic parts, ideas, worksheets, video, scanning
  • General question and answer session.

Introduction to Logic Studio 8

This short course covers the basic elements of creating music and recording/editing MIDI music data and audio tracks in Apple’s Logic Pro.

The course begins with the fundamentals of digital audio/MIDI workstations and teaches ways to develop a creative process and how to make useful recordings using Logic.

Classes will also include tips on good recording techniques and appropriate equipment selection.


Core Elements

  • Exploring Logic’s interface. Basics of MIDI, virtual instruments and digital audio. Recording MIDI. Using loops.
  • The Logic environment and setting up your virtual studio. Editing MIDI. Recording and editing audio.
NB: The course is based around Logic Studio 8 on Mac, but should be useful to people using other versions of Logic, including Logic Express.

DJ Course: A Beginner’s Guide

This is a 24 hour short course that runs for three hours, two nights per week, for four weeks.

Students learn beat mixing/juggling, scratching, CD mixing and event management, and are introduced to Serato Scratch Live. A large range of vinyl is available for students to choose from, to practice their turntable skills on our DJ workstations.

Pat Pattison: Lyric-writing Seminar

Pat is Professor of lyric writing at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts. He has a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience, a wonderful entertaining speaking style, and a self deprecating sense of humour that keeps his seminars entertaining. Some of Pat’s previous topics have been: ‘Brainstorming Techniques’, ‘Verse Development’, ‘How To Make Your Lyrics Work Well With The Melody’.
